Community Hero Award: Simon Dearing: From Quizzes to Community Change
When we think of the heart of Manilva, one name shines brighter than most, Simon Dearing. Over the past five years, Simon has raised an incredible €60,000 for local causes, dedicating his time, energy, and passion to making Duquesa and the wider Manilva area a better place for everyone.
It all began with the creation of the much-loved charity quiz nights, which have become a local tradition and a key driver of fundraising in the community. These events have supported countless initiatives, proof that small gatherings can make a huge difference when they are powered by purpose and passion.
Simon’s efforts have led to tangible improvements in our town. One of his proudest achievements was securing the installation of a defibrillator in Duquesa Port, a vital resource that could one day save lives. He also worked with the community to arrange new railings for the dangerous steps at the top end of the port, making the area safer for residents and visitors alike.

But Simon’s generosity extends far beyond infrastructure. He played a crucial role in raising a large sum to help Chef Abs’ child receive cancer treatment, and even organised funds for tablets so that both siblings could stay connected and entertained during long journeys to chemotherapy sessions. These are the moments that remind us how powerful a caring community can be.
Through his very own kids’ charity, Simon has brought joy to countless local children. From organising magical Christmas parties for underprivileged families, to providing back-to-school packages, and even arranging special trips to the zoo, Simon has ensured that every child feels seen, supported, and included.
And he hasn’t stopped there. Simon continues to support a wide range of causes including Los Barrios Dog Shelter, Collective Calling, The British Legion, St George’s, and many more. His commitment reaches every corner of our community.
Beyond his charitable work, Simon is the proud owner of The Rose & Thistle, one of the most beloved venues in Duquesa, and he regularly appears on Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun on Channel 5. These appearances bring awareness to Manilva, showcasing our town to a wider audience and reminding viewers of the special place we call home.
The truth is, there are simply too many things to list, too many moments of kindness, too many quiet acts of generosity, to capture the full impact Simon has had on Duquesa. He has given his time, his heart, and his creativity to make this community thrive, and in doing so, he has inspired others to join him in giving back.
